Reliquaries, 2023/2024

Intertwined Gestures, 2024
São Roque Museum, Lisbon
Curated by José Quaresma

On display at the São Roque Museum, "Reliquaries" is a research project developed from the museum's collection. A profound reflection on the nature of this object begins with the etymology of the word, from the Latin "reliquiae, -arum," referring to remains, leftovers, and bones. It then explores the origin of the object, which is linked to the practice of collecting mementos through relics.

The choice of bones as a central element, glorifying human remains, is constructed through the absence of paint, starting from their negative form, serving as a metaphor for our relationship with the sacred, the worship of the immaterial, of that which we do not actually see, of which we possess only vestiges.
